Curriculum Overview

World Language is offered to students over the course of their years at OLM.

Students in PK 3 - Gr. 5 are taught Spanish and Italian
Students in Grades 6 -8 are given the option to take French or Spanish 
Students in Grades 7 & Grade 8 are encouraged to remain with the same language allowing for consistency

 

The Santillana series is used for the Spanish classes.

Pre-K & Kindergarten

Children will learn vocabulary through games, songs and hands-on activities, read books of children’s stories.
 
By the end of the year children will be able to:
  • respond to basic greetings,
  • recite numbers 0-10 in sequence,
  • make simple statements about the weather, winter clothing: “I put-on, take-off…”
  • make simple statements about foods: “I like, I don’t like…”
  • identify:  colors, days of the week, body parts, vocabulary based on the “Very Hungry Caterpillar” 

First to 4th Grade

Lessons appropriate for each grade are organized by topics. They will: learn vocabulary through worksheets, games, puzzles, songs, hands-on activities. The program includes listening, speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary.
 
By the end of the year children will be able to:
 

1st Grade

  • respond to basic greetings,
  • recite numbers 0-20 in sequence,
  • know the seven days of the week and the months of the year expressing likes and dislikes
  • identify:  colors, classroom objects, winter clothing, body parts, food and drink items,  family members.

2nd Grade

  • respond to  basic greetings,
  • recite numbers  in sequence, recite the days of the week, the months and seasons of the year
  • make simple weather statements,
  • use simple descriptive adjectives,
  • identify:  colors,  body parts, articles of clothing, family members,  classroom objects, food and drink item

3rd Grade

  • use introductory greetings
  • distinguish formal from informal address
  • recite numbers in sequence
  • use definite and indefinite articles, masculine and feminine, singular and plural,
  • use  descriptive adjectives
  • use  commands
  • use everyday verbs
  • describe “my daily routine”
  • identify: colors,  articles of clothing, food and drink items, ,  body parts,   house items,  family members, classroom objects.

4th Grade

  • use introductory greetings,
  • distinguish formal from informal address,
  • use numbers from 1-100,
  • use definite and indefinite articles, use masculine and feminine, singular and plural,
  • use possessive adjectives
  • Introduction to helping verbs
  • describe “my daily routine”
  • use everyday verbs
  • Make small class presentations in the target language
  • identify: colors,  articles of clothing, food and drink items, body parts, house items,  family members, classroom objects.

6th Grade

Student will use Based on “Allez Viens” level 1A, and “¡Exprésate! Level 1A

  • use introductory greetings,
  • distinguish formal from informal address,
  • exchange information such as: name, age, country of origin, address,  telephone, and time
  • practice and use definite and indefinite articles, use masculine and feminine, singular and plural,
  • use possessive adjectives
  • use antonyms
  • use prepositions
  • use subject pronouns 

7th Grade

Student will use Based on “Allez Viens” level 1A, and “¡Exprésate! Level 1A which teaches students to recognize the large number of words and expressions that are alike in English and in Spanish (cognates), strategies and rules for converting English words to Spanish and French, hints for identifying large numbers of new words in these 2 languages, and formulas to help students use verbs to describe events in the past, present, and future. Introduction to helping verbs, regular verbs, adjectives, negative and interrogative sentences…
 
The conversations, explanations, exercises, activities, and tapes provide students with:
  • a well-rounded approach that enables them to practice reading and writing Spanish and French
  • a more tangible approach to the material,
  • the most current language usage,
  • lists of words and expressions
  • a thoughtful, attractive presentation that motivates them to delve into the material. 

8th Grade

Student will use “Allez Viens” level 1B, and “¡Exprésate! Level 1B which will help them discover various countries where these languages are spoken while encouraging them to use the past, present and future tenses. These programs cover an array of grammatical training that will enable the students be ready for High School Language challenges. The different situations presented in the books will enhance their vocabulary, and help them increase in fluency, accuracy and complexity over time.

As they progress, the students will be required to read and analyze simple books in the target language. The adventure of new readings, without vocabulary limits and grammar confinements, will reinforce their knowledge, comfort level and encourage spontaneous self-expression.
