ART

The art program at Our Lady of Mercy School is an essential part of a student’s academic, emotional, and spiritual growth. Art program gives students the opportunity to explore their creativity through personal expression of ideas and cultures. Our mission is to build an appreciation of art, sharpen skills, and encourage confidence. Through a project-based curriculum children learn about a variety of artists, history, vocabulary, and techniques. The art program allows children a greater understanding of their own cultural heritage, as well as the larger world around them.
To all who are passionately dedicated to the search for new ‘epiphanies’ of beauty so that through their creative work as artists they may offer these gifts to the world.”

  Pope John Paul, II

MUSIC

The music program is designed to prepare children to be musical in three ways: Artful, Beautiful, and Tuneful.

Children are taught to become aware of melody, to be mindful of music in their inner voice and be able to vocalize notes. They learn that music can elicit an emotional response. They are encouraged to feel the rhythm of music and understand how the pulse is grouped within each song. They learn how to use their “invisible” instrument, THEIR VOICE!

They learn to sing echo and response songs. The music program further enables children to acquire musical skills and knowledge through singing, playing small instruments, performing, moving to music and creating music. Listening to, analyzing and evaluating music are important building blocks of musical learning. Learning to read and notate music gives students skills to explore musical traditions, new musical experiences and their own creativity. All students enjoy music classes.

Some of the many musical happenings throughout the school year are: the Traditional Christmas Pageant, our many concerts, musicals, and patriotic events. OLM children are an integral part of the monthly masses and prayer services.

Instrumental Band is an option for students beginning in Grade 4.
